A pragmatic approach to semantic repositories benchmarking

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to benchmark various semantic repositories in order to evaluate their deployment in a commercial image retrieval and browsing application. We adopt a two-phase approach for evaluating the target semantic repositories: analytical parameters such as query language and reasoning support are used to select the pool of the target repositories, and practical parameters such as load and query response times are used to select the best match to application requirements. In addition to utilising a widely accepted benchmark for OWL repositories (UOBM), we also use a real-life dataset from the target application, which provides us with the opportunity of consolidating our findings. A distinctive advantage of this benchmarking study is that the essential requirements for the target system such as the semantic expressivity and data scalability are clearly defined, which allows us to claim contribution to the benchmarking methodology for this class of applications

Consumer insight and user-producer interaction : tussenrapportage

    Get PDF

High throughput indexing for large-scale semantic web data

    Get PDF
Distributed RDF data management systems become increasingly important with the growth of the Semantic Web. Currently, several such systems have been proposed, however, their indexing methods meet performance bottlenecks either on data loading or querying when processing large amounts of data. In this work, we propose a high throughout index to enable rapid analysis of large datasets. We adopt a hybrid structure to combine the loading speed of similar-size based methods with the execution speed of graph-based approaches, using dynamic data repartitioning over query workloads. We introduce the design and detailed implementation of our method. Experimental results show that the proposed index can indeed vastly improve loading speeds while remaining competitive in terms of performance. Therefore, the method could be considered as a good choice for RDF analysis in large-scale distributed scenarios

Experts aan het stuur - modelleren met ROC

    Get PDF

Trusty URIs: Verifiable, Immutable, and Permanent Digital Artifacts for Linked Data

    Get PDF
To make digital resources on the web verifiable, immutable, and permanent, we propose a technique to include cryptographic hash values in URIs. We call them trusty URIs and we show how they can be used for approaches like nanopublications to make not only specific resources but their entire reference trees verifiable. Digital artifacts can be identified not only on the byte level but on more abstract levels such as RDF graphs, which means that resources keep their hash values even when presented in a different format. Our approach sticks to the core principles of the web, namely openness and decentralized architecture, is fully compatible with existing standards and protocols, and can therefore be used right away. Evaluation of our reference implementations shows that these desired properties are indeed accomplished by our approach, and that it remains practical even for very large files.Comment: Small error corrected in the text (table data was correct) on page 13: "All average values are below 0.8s (0.03s for batch mode). Using Java in batch mode even requires only 1ms per file.

Applying semantic web technologies to knowledge sharing in aerospace engineering

    Get PDF
This paper details an integrated methodology to optimise Knowledge reuse and sharing, illustrated with a use case in the aeronautics domain. It uses Ontologies as a central modelling strategy for the Capture of Knowledge from legacy docu-ments via automated means, or directly in systems interfacing with Knowledge workers, via user-defined, web-based forms. The domain ontologies used for Knowledge Capture also guide the retrieval of the Knowledge extracted from the data using a Semantic Search System that provides support for multiple modalities during search. This approach has been applied and evaluated successfully within the aerospace domain, and is currently being extended for use in other domains on an increasingly large scale

Reliability and Interpretability of Sonographic Measurements of Palmar Dupuytren Nodules

    Get PDF
Purpose: In the future, it is expected that treatment of Dupuytren disease (DD) may shift toward control of early disease. Ultrasound might be an accurate method to measure the outcome of such treatment. The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of sonographic measurement of palmar nodules. Methods: Fifty patients with nodules characteristic for early disease were assessed with ultrasound by 2 observers. Four different aspects of DD nodules were measured in the transversal and sagittal planes, width, depth, circumference, and area. The intra- and interobserver reliabilities were calculated using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The standard error of measurement (SEM) and the smallest detectable change (SDC) were also calculated for each aspect. Results: The intraobserver reliability was good (ICC, 0.724 [0.562–0.833] to 0.886 [0.808–0.934]), except for width in the sagittal direction (ICC, 0.671 [0.484–0.799]). The interobserver reliability was moderate (ICC, 0.385 [0.126–0.596] to 0.757 [0.538–0.869]). The intraobserver ICCs of area were highest (transverse, 0.847 [0.744–0.893]; sagittal, 0.886 [0.808–0.934]). The SEM and SDC of area were 6.1 and 16.9 mm2 in the transverse and 8.0 and 22.2 mm2 in the sagittal plane. Conclusions: The intraobserver reliability of sonographic assessment of DD nodules is good. The measurement of area is the most reliable and is, therefore, recommended for future studies. However, even single-observer measurements have a clear dispersion, and a change beyond 16.9 (61%) and 22.2 mm2 (79%) has to be observed in the transverse and sagittal planes, respectively, before it can be considered as regression or progression. Clinical relevance: Repeated ultrasonographic measurements in DD should ideally be done by a single observer, using area of the nodule in the sagittal plane. Change beyond 16.9 (transverse) and 22.2 (sagittal) mm2 can be considered as a real change in nodule size
